CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
A basic course in biology which covers the fundamental concepts of 
the molecular basis of life, cell theory, tissues, organ systems, 
immunity and defense systems, inheritance, behavior, evolution,
and an introduction to classification. Includes a two-hour lab.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF COURSE:
    That the student:
1.  Develop a basic understanding of the scientific 
    enterprise and the scientific method.
2.  Develop a logical and critical approach to the 
    study of living things.
3.  Develop a basic understanding of the theories
    pertaining to the origin of life.
4.  Demonstrate a knowledge of the basic biological 
    compounds (carbohydrates, fats and amino acids).
5.  Demonstrate a knowledge of osmosis, diffusion 
    and active transport.
6.  Describe the structure and function of DNA, 
    mRNA, and the basic cell organelles.
7.  Demonstrate a knowledge of the function, and 
    identify the stages, of mitosis and meiosis.
8.  Identify and describe the structure and function 
    of the basic plant and animal tissues.
9.  Describe the basic structure and function of the human digestive,
    respiration, circulatory, and chemical control systems.
10. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of Mendellian inheritance.
11. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of animal behavior.
12. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of taxonomy.

be completed on the day of return, whether or not there is a scheduled
